Huggins Pleads No Contest To DUI Charge

April 21, 2003

Coach Fined, Could Serve Jail Time FAIRFAX, Ohio --

University of Cincinnati basketball coach Bob Huggins pleaded no contest Tuesday night to his highly publicized DUI charge.

Huggins stood next to his lawyer, Richard Katz, as Katz entered the no contest plea for him in a courtroom in the Cincinnati suburb of Fairfax, Cincinnati television station WLWT reported.

Huggins was fined $1,000, but the judge suspended $650 of that amount, reducing the coach's penalty to $350. Also, a 180-day jail term was suspended by 177 days, WLWT reported. Huggins has the option to serve either three days in jail or in a court-appointed alcohol treatment facility.

Huggins was arrested June 8, and a videotape of the coach's field-sobriety tests was released to the media June 11. A police dashboard camera captured Huggins' tests as he wobbled some and had trouble reciting a portion of the alphabet and counting backward, WLWT reported.

Fairfax police charged Huggins with a first-time, misdemeanor drunken-driving violation, alleging that he failed to control his car as he drove in the Cincinnati suburb last week.

Saturday, UC Athletic Director Bob Goin suspended Huggins, 50, indefinitely with pay, and Monday named UC Associate Head Coach Dan Peters the interim coach. Goin said he'll reinstate Huggins when he thinks the coach has addressed his personal issues. In 2002, Huggins suffered a heart attack and last year, his mother died.
